Accountant makes major VAT return error...

Recommended Posts

Just call HMRC and explain the situation. They should be able to scrub the return and your accountant can resubmit.

Like that's a 2 minute job.....

Not laughing at the advice (it's sound) just (through bitter personal experience) the prospect of trying (a) to even connect by phone with HMRC and (b) trying to talk sense to anyone with 2 brain cells if you do get through!

My next conversation with HMRC is at the Royal Courts of Justice later this month... They wouldn't listen to reason, so now they are having their inept asses dragged in front of the beak.... Again!

Sadly I think you will have to try and call HMRC and explain what has happened. Their systems will, in all probability, pick up an 'unuaual' return in that it is identical to 12 months ago and this may trigger a VAT inspection - something which you should try to avoid at all costs! My last one took a total of 8 visits, at the end of which I owed them just £28.

But cost you how much time valued at £X per hour?

Morning guys, first post so apologies for jumping straight in.

Do you have the correct VAT figure? If so, pay over the correct amount so don't incur any interest for late payment. Should be able to speak to the VAT office and explain what has happened, or even better get someone else at the accountants to call and waste their time not yours, time is money after all.

It's likely that they'll have to submit a manual form to HMRC with the corrected figures which may automatically raise an assessment for submission of an incorrect return. If that's the case it will need appealing. But again, get the accountant to sort that and forward you copies of the correspondence so that you know it's being done.

Spoke with the senior partner in the firm today. Admitted fault but no apology (the two are not the same imo). He said he misread the table but then referred to another one with insufficient data. I just checked the spreadsheet I sent and now he's getting confused with 2013.

What utter pillocks.

Why on earth do you get them to do your vat returnn anyway? If you already have the spreadsheets, surely its all worked out for you?

I have come across this before and hmrc will always say its the person who is regsistered for vat who is responsible for checking the return is correct before sending it, and wont accept a mistake from a third party.
