If you go halfords try to get a trade card first as its upto an additional 25% off tools

And the cheapest place to get tools suprisingly seems to be amazon

Or you could try ffx usually have sales on

For 1/2in get a decent set of deep drive impact sockets and buy a good ratchet. I got these a couple of years ago and they do the vast majority of the work now. Even for light work they fit well and are just very nice to use. Not cheap but you're better with as good quality as possible in the stuff you do use rather than the cost spread over a lot of stuff than you won't use.

If you're fussy then a nice little 3/8 - 1/4 set combined for fiddly stuff (I've Laser and Teng both and can't fault either), or going the other way buy a good quality 3/4 T-bar and buy individual 3/4 impact sockets in specific sizes as you need them.

Halfords socket sets are badly let down by the crap cases that they come in. The tools are ok though..

True that my case has cracked and 2 of the for close latches are knackered after 8 months of not much use. The tools are plenty good enough for me fixing my work stuff.

Halfords tools are made by Danaher (?) who also make Draper Expert and several other brands. You have the advantage of their warranty, Sunday opening etc. Facom/Britool etc. are good but finding a local stockist may not be so easy and they're bound to be more.

I've added mac and King dick to your list, I have a combination of Facom, mac and teng plus some odd Stalhwhile, snap on and King Dick. The mac and facom are lovely in comparison though I haven't broken any Teng yet.

I found using my localish tool supplier (king tools in Rushden) to be by far the cheapest, I normally spend quite a bit when I buy tools and they do me loads of discount + I can pull individual tools out of sets, they do all the warranty on my behalf and will rush order anything I need/break.

Now I am not normally one to baulk at the price of tools but the last Mac franchise I visited had eye watering prices that would make the price gougers at Snap On wince.
