If ought goes wrong with your internet purchase, how do you return it? I would prefer to support local businesses as they might also support me when I need them. Plus, they are after making a profit, same as me and have higher overheads than a black store. Yes, it might seem dear but he has it in stock and you area away and busy again.

Tell you the truth I'm not bothered if the purchsase goes wrong. I'm only putting a new battery on the mower so I can sell it on the Internet. Even if I wasn't selling it I'd still take my chance on the Internet purchase.

I also prefer to support local business hence asking Mrs Egg to nip into the dealers....... But I ain't paying twice the money to support them.

Call him up, tell him you can get one half price, see if he'll meet you in the middle?

Besides, you've got a big lawn and a ride on mower, you can afford it

The battery is ordered now, should be here Friday.

The reason I've got a big lawn is I don't give twice the going rate for batteries.:001_tongue:

I have this problem with local saw dealers they are selling saws for over £100 more than FR Jones, but are only about 40 miles from them, it's crazy I don't know how they sell any, and in this case both are proper retailers with shops so theirs no excuses involving lower overheads etc.

If it's a like for like item, I normally look on the internet to find the best price then go to my local dealer to see if they can get close. If they can, they get the business. If they are way out, I buy online. They are normally pretty good when I ask them reasonably. Last saw I bought from them I got a third off without any argument.

The view from the dealer side (not the one in question!)

Firstly, the whole point in stocking any item is to sell it and make money.

When I stock any item I have to pay for it with my own money. We are only a small family concern yet have well over £50k tied up in stock at any one time, that's my money sat on the shelf rather than in the bank, but the whole point is for it to make me some money to live on, just like some of you may go out and earn an hourly wage to live on. So asking me to discount an item by £10 (for example) is like an employer asking his employee to work an hour for free.

Secondly, although not doubting the OP in this eggsample, it is actually quite difficult to compare batteries. Ones that look alike, even from the same manufacturer often have different specs for different markets. So OE quality batteries are difficult to source from anyone other than the machinery manufacturer and are often highly priced, but lookalikes can be found on the web much cheaper. Some of these are designed to look like the originals, just like those counterfeit saws that look like Stihls. So buyer beware.

Thirdly, as Pete B points out, if you buy a battery, or any other item from your dealer you know that if it is faulty you can take it back and the dealer will sort you out. In the case of batteries it is relatively common to get a faulty one and we will always swap it for a new one if the fault develops in the first year, but we get no warranty from our supplier on certain batteries so have to carry the can ourselves, another reason to make a bit on the sale.
