Training employees.. Fair and reasonable?

Unfortunately that will be hard to enforce

 

its not really relevant that it is local or residential

 

build loyalty clause in that if they leave within certain time they pay the training back longer time goes less they pay

 

But with getting more men with more qualifications the you will be able to tender etc for more / bigger jobs which will pay you back times over

I am after opinions. No decisions have been made, by me or my employees. I like using Arbtalk as a sounding board to gauge what others think so I can make informed decisions. You would be amazed at how often others think you are wrong... When clearly they are.. :)

 

For guys without driving licences it is a right PITA trying to get to locations to do training. A simple solution is to send them away to a for a week or so at a time. They come back with tickets..

 

I want to be fair so if i offer it to non drivers I have to do the same to drivers.. .

If they haven't got the skills / quals you need they could face being laid off

Leaving you to replace them with qualified people that suit your business needs

 

I too paid for all my own training in all my own time and think your offer is more than good

A compromise may be for them to do it in unpaid leave rather than use up their hols

 

Not quite as simple as that. Firstly, you would need to be able to justify the redundancy as per The Employment Rights Act 1996. Given that you would be looking to replace them rather than just cut numbers due to a downturn in business, you would be on a hiding to nothing. As long as the new position is substantially (75%) the same as the old position then it still is the old position. This means that you could not replace them within 6 months without first having to offer them their old jobs back. Anybody selected using the reasoning above could argue convincing that are were unfairly selected for exercising their statutory rights and take you for unfair dismissal. All in all, even ignoring the bad feeling created by such actions (and the unpleasant reputation it would give) you would be creating your own personal shi'ite storm. :001_smile:

It is unreasonable to ask employees to use holiday entitlement to undertake further training which will in turn benefit your business.

Training should be treated as any other working day whether the training is undertaken away or on site.

Just after feedback as to if I am being a fair and reasonable employer..

 

I need to put some guys through CS training. A number of them can't drive so getting them to CS courses that are always of the way is always difficult...

 

I have offered to put them on a residential course and pay for the training and accommodation, is it fair to ask for them to take the time off as holiday?No

 

I paid for all my own training and would have jumped at the opportunity but my guys don't all seem to be that keen?Not relevant imo

 

They don't have kids to look after at home.. Not relevant IMO

Even the stay away from home needs to be compensated in some way.

If not an "away" course, then the guys who can't drive, shouldn't be expected to make their way elsewhere other than to your yard for their normal start/finish times as per a normal working day. Assuming they meet at your yard every day-

 

Thats assuming they're employed, not subbies too.

Blimey, I'd be happy for the training.

I had to do no end of crap jobs to get the money for my cs units, I don't think many employers offer cs units and I think they should be greatful for the £700 odd quid it costs.

 

I think if it was a course specific for a job that you had asked them to do of little benefit to them ie water rescue, needle safe etc they should be paid. If they are aspiring arborists with additional cs units they should be jumping at it.

What about if it was I had said i have a lad who really wants to do some training, I am willing to pay for the training if he does it in holiday. Is that fair..?:001_smile:
