What do people pay?

if you want to make a concession, how about you supply the fuel / chain oil for him to use on your jobs.

as for profit share.............................................really? not sure which planet Vespasian is on.

I've done it more than once if I thought it helped.. its not like the fellas there every day is it...

I used to pay my friends son a day rate for helping out on my gardening round, then share the profit on tree work..

60/40.. just to keep the lad from making my life a misery by sulking all day...

Sometimes I even paid him more than I was getting, my aim to finish a job, get it out the way, be done with it...

Yes, I'll never be a millionaire, but I didn't start out to be that anyway.. as long as I can get by I'm OK...

I'm also OK with getting less than my help if it means a decent nights sleep..

I've been desperately trying not to jump in......

But it's beaten me... I give in to Arbtalk!

I'll start with a scene setter:

Cornwall is officially the poorest area in the UK | West Briton

So, as the snarling badger intimated earlier, you might expect wages to be lower than anywhere else in the UK? Maybe...

As the Roman Emperor says - does friendship count for nothing? And isn't there an element of working hard but enjoying the company? And as Joe replied - not in business....

I'm leaning more towards Vesp's angle. Business is business, but GOOD business leaves everyone feeling good no?

Mark Bolam's suggested "additional benefit" almost made my dinner reappear and offers a stark example of how the thoughts above might be fatally flawed though...

I allocate £150/day for the bloke I work with. That's usually 9-3ish on-site which kind of equates to £25/hr. Worth every penny.

Might it be that pricing jobs needs to take account of this? £80/100/125 - that's shelf stacking money....

Without being too melodramatic (for fear of causing outraged indignation from Skyhuck) we trust, and spend much of our lives with the people we work with....

Surely that counts for something???

It does.

You continue to enploy those people who meet that criteria!

One more thing to add to the mix is that having a conversation with a mate about 'not paying him more' may actually be easier then someone who just works for you. I find with a friend you can be more open about the situation and the running a of the business (if he is a good friend).

He may say well I can't work for you but at least he might understand where you are coming from and you can always stay mates.

Where as is you tell a worker you can't pay them more, they look as the price of the job and think 'he's raking it in and says can't pay me anymore' but you can't always go in to detail about your business situation to someone who just works for you.

This may make sense or just be gobbledegook, but I think it has some reason behind it.

And yes I had to check how to spell gobbledegook :-/.

Good post Badger.

We also need to appreciate the gulf of difference between an entry level groundie, and an experienced rescue-ticketed one who can drive anything, tow anything and pretty much run the job.

Kevin, I appreciate what you're saying, and your sums might stack up on a good day for me, but they don't on an average or bad one.
