I guess Bens point is with some people if they had to pay for a taxi they may declassify the emergency all of a sudden to something that could be done that evening.

Or many people suffer with completely dependant partners ( not through disability) and so complain on a regular basis about problems that could easily be solved by a second driving license or car in their family....But rather than work to adapt they simply make it the problem of their employer, friends family etc. In a real emergency obviously people need to get going quickly and efficiently but there's no reason why this can't be done with minimal disruption to the working day I find its usefully handy to have 2 vehicles on site for a variety of reasons.

What a load of rubbish. It amazes me how out of a group of lads there is always one or two that seem to have continual 'emergencies' of one sort or another but the other lads come in on time, do a days work and go home despite having less han simple personal lives. You can either cope or you can't!!

Starve the trolls mate.

How is somethin trolling when its meant to be funny ?...

And, even if it was trolling, which is sort of true in a way, its no different than someone bleating about costs when an employee might cost an employer money in case of an emergency situation....

Surely this thread itself is a troll thread... or am I the only one who see's that?.... somehow I doubt it..

I am not sure you have read the op. At no point has taking an injured employee to a hospital been mentioned. Or taking a days wage to help someone injured at work.

as an employer i have to make decisions that i think are are reasonable. I post on this site to see if others agree or think i am out of line. I am interested in others useful contributions but will argue my point.

to be honest you are asking folks as to whether you have been fair, but as i see it it is impossible to say as you havent given any info on the employee ( new last week or been with you 15yrs? reliable or not?) or the actual emergency, " i need to get home now" could mean very different things for different people.

whats done is done , if you thing your in the wrong then apologize.

awkward situation for sure.

When people have to make desicions under pressure, they are going to use their own Morals! That's not a rule, that's not right or wrong.

As a company owner you have to have policies to which your employees follow. These need discussed before employment at the interview stage.

You may of had a bad day, you may of had a good day, the person in question may be the golden boy they may be the useless guy! If it's the useless guy then expectations are of laziness so on the flip side the good worker gets penalised when they need something in return from the employer.

If the climber needs to go and the tree isn't finished and you have 4 guys on site well that's a pita.

The are rules of employment out there you need to follow whether you are a 1 man band or Tescos! It's that simple, it's not a moral dilemma!

Hypothetical..ish question - If you have a member of staff or free lancer who has to leave a job for an emergency at home that is about an hour away. They are in a team of 3 and the job could go on without them.

What would you expect the team to do?........................................................................

See the thing is this isn't exactly clear is it?... but reading on it seems what you really want to know is, how does one tell if someone is lying or exaggerating a claim.

how to know what constitutes a real emergency?...

Well I suppose you might ask whats gone on an determine for yourself if its an emergency or not..

If you determine that it is an actual emergency then you get em home hospital or where ever ASAP...

If you think its not an emergency, but they do, then sure let em make their own way home.

But if its an emergency and all you can do is think about your own inconvenience, then I suggest a lobotomy ....

Now, theres some serious discussion there and a bit of fun thrown in for effect, just in case the troll hunters get all tied in knots....they to should get a lobotomy...

It was more of a general question, it did happen today but it has happened a number of times in a number of situations. I dont think i am in tbe wrong, and it was not awkward but it is open for discusion!
