Labour shortages

Well I don't mind foreigners working for the NHS, but for it to be as many as it is is disgraceful.. In fact I'm almost tempted to say Managers of the NHS are giving preference to foreign applicants for political motives..

Though knowing British attitudes to work, I'm just as surprised theres not a lot more foreigners working for the NHS..

Give me strength, you don't know which way to turn on these things..

I think it has more to do with the current university culture. Im 20 and a year and a half out of college. They push you going to uni so much, It's seen as a bit off to not want to go now (I'd rather be outside than pushing a pencil all day!)

The if you don't go to uni you will fail kind of thing gets pushed on you a lot too.

Also a lot of people look down on manual labour type jobs. Roofers, bricklayers etc are all seen as working class, dirty, crap jobs by a worrying amount of people I know. Lots of my peers are too pissy to just get their hands dirty.

My sister is a nurse, She gets an alright wage but for the amount of free work she gave the NHS in training and the hours she does now it just doesn't quite add up. Im also not suprised nobody wants to become a teacher, With the state its in at the moment.

Is there any business sector out there that is not needing more skilled workers? How can we still have unemployment in the UK? It's got to be difficult to argue that the work isn't out there for the willing, or is all this news a flawed picture??

The UK’s shortage of homecare workers could increase to over 20,000 by the end of the decade if current trends continue, new research shows.

The Truckers are a fine example of how British business & successive governments have caused skills deficits - HGV driving used to be a very well paid job, the Truckers were well experienced & knew how to properly handle big rigs - they earned their money - never used to get trucks ploughing into back of cars on hard shoulders 30 hrs ago. But then a bunch of smartarses go & get Europeans in for half the pay - no longer worth it so the experienced Brit drivers leave & go and do something more profitable - then later when we're all being killed on the roads by people you wonder how they ever got licences oh forgot we have very high test STDs and everyone else just have to demonstrate they can start the engine. So, ltdr - all the smartarses wish they had better drivers - but they all left years ago :-(

SKILLS SHORTAGE! - they're gonna lose all our Doctors next ......... Mark my words.

Yes, but is there really a skills shortage at all, considering they can hire continentals from eastern Europe an all..

who commissions these polls?...whats their motive/agenda?...perhaps trade unions fabricating research to get their employees a better deal..

I mean, how many times over how many years have I read similar stories..

its not all down to the british population being lazy

since the day i turned 16 until I gain my apprenticeship in greenkeeping i applied for 364 jobs in varying industries, put an appeal out on local radio, went for every single trade test i could, wrote to every single plumbing company with 50 miles of me and got 2 replies saying no, i done weeks of work experiance with various companies somethimes working 90+ hours in the week but still no job i even wrote to the bloody prime minister who referred me to my local mp who asked what benefits i was getting.......

there are millions in the same situation that i was in

The construction industry has to take on more apprentices, its the only option to plug this gap

after what i've went through getting my qualifications i intend to use the knowledge gained to its full potential

if you can take on an apprentince they go for it, you never know what its took for that person to get to that offer and what it could do for you and your business
