Ohh sorry, I always thought it was possible for a ship to change direction?

Don't blame Thatcher for sinking the Belgrano. Blame the Argentinians that started the war.

I blame Thatcher for lying to the British public.. which brings into question her motives..

Which I might add brings in her qualities as a leader...not much of one in my opinion...

On it's way home or going into battle, we were at WAR, it wasn't a rugby match where fair play is all. It was a heavily armed warship, the clue is in the name, it wasn't a hospital ship. it would have been fully capable of turning around and coming back and engaging our forces. Christ on a cycle what planet are you on?

I'm on that planet that see's truth as a virtue, not to mention I don't like politicians and media lying to us.

Do they think we're to thick to handle the truth?....

Well, maybe it's just not coming across that way, or maybe my crypto is not sync'd with yours?

You may think she lied (I'm assuming we're focussing on the Belgrano point) but my perspective would be that it was a necessary, logical and righteous act in the context of the conflict to authorise the sinking.

How the facts were relayed to the British public is a consequence of being shackled by liberal criticism and frontline media in conflict areas.

You may view it in contemptuous terms, I salute the single minded determination to achieve the political objective through military means.

That's leadership.

I was very fortunate to have met, had a long chat and dinner with Sir Bernard Ingham in 2005. I can take from that a good deal more insight and understanding of the person Margaret Thatcher than would ever be available from a portion of the media which seeks to demonise her at any cost.

I was also in the FIs '83 and on several later occasions. Have you met any FI residents and do you think they'd share your view?

I think we should of done the decent thing, gone off to war and defeated the Argentine Junta of the time...

Don't suppose we had much choice...

What I couldn't stand was, it was Thatcher in charge of the expedition..hated that woman..

Then to have her take the piss out of us when men were dying is beyond despicable...

Now if you want to know what I think the Islanders thought, well I'm sure they were happy, why wouldn't they be...

But given the cost of keeping those Islands I'd of got rid of them a long time ago...

why spend billions over the years defending what amounts to a glorified sheep farm?..

still I suppose national pride comes into play, and now we're stuck with the things, pouring money into frigid black hole down in the South Atlantic..

perhaps a research station can be built in some part of the islands, invite Argentine's to run it and by inches build the base up till theres more of them than Islanders and then let em vote it to Argentina..

One less white elephant to pay for....

For the very same reason your precious Mr Blair invaded Iraq on Bush's coat tails.

I was prepared to take at face value your declaration of understanding of broad strategic policy, the last post kinda takes it away though. I'm left thinking your apparent hatred of the person must be clouding your logic.

No worries, it's nothing a long night on the beer couldn't fix!!

What about motive' date=' why lie?.....to hide her shame... sinking a ship that was on its way home..

The woman was despicable..[/quote]

I don't see why the fact it was heading home matters in the slightest. It was an enemy ship, operating at the very limit of the exclusion zone, so was judged to be a threat.

Was it immoral to shoot down German bombers after they'd already dropped their payload on London as they were only on their way home!
