hi guys, i'm looking to do some deep bowls on my lathe and currently the chuck jaws only stick out a few inches and when remounting and roughed bowl on the large size the rim would foul the headstock so need something like in the picture below. it's merely a male to female extension that must be perfectly concentric. the one in the picture is too short and no one else makes them. it needs to be 5-6" long.

 

can anyone help?

Do you know the threads (pitch, diameter and form)?

Would it run truer if you made something to go into your jaws on the chuck and then extend out.

 

Maybe similar to a faceplate that sits on c jaws but with a threaded spindle on the front

any engineering shop will make you one, not very difficult job

could be that sticking the bowl out by by that amount may impose to much stress?

no mate, it's the chuck i want further out. when i turn large bowls i put a tenon in the bottom so that when it's dried out i can then re mount it and turn the underside of the bowl. i need and extension to get the chuck and jaws further away from the headstock as the rims of deeper bowls foul the headstock.

 

 

i currently have a catalpa bowl that has 7"+ depth and i need to grip the inside of the bowl to turn the bottom. sadly the oneway extension in the photo is inlt 3" and that coupled with the chuck body and jaws is not enough.

Can you just use two 3 inch extensions

you could in theory but the problem with that is you will get play in any joint so i want to avoid it if possible. also they cost £70 each, i should be able to get one long one made for that...
