Log ID please

Hi all,

Been given some wood that was sat in a clients car park, but not sure what it is. My father reckons sweet chestnut (and he used to burn a lot of it), but I'm not convinced as a few smaller pieces @ around 20% moisture burnt without spitting at all in the burner.

It's quite light weight and was even when I originally picked it up (lower 30's %).

The most striking thing is how dark the cut ends were compared to the fresh cut/ split logs.

I know it's probably a real easy one, but I've not seen anything else standing similar in their grounds.

I'd say horse chestnut from those pictures.

Could be Alder.

Could be alder - I've only cut up freshly felled alder before and that was really wet with pink sap literally squirting out when the log grenade went in. I thought horse chestnut spit as well as sweet so shied away from that. I could be very wrong tho' !

Alder for sure great firewood very under rated by a lot of log merchants drys quick as well.

alder turns orange very quickly so you'll know if its that or not. i'm going to suggest lime but if you give me a close up of the grain it might help.

Thanks for the ideas, never come across Lime before. Will post a better grain shot tomorrow.

Alder for me . Is the ground damp / soggy were t was felled ?
