Creosote with 10 - 20% of old engine oil mixed in if you don't mind it a bit darker. Of the propietary products, Ronseal Ducksback is good - 2 coats needed initially though for best protection. Forest Oak is closest to original closeboard colour

When I was a kid My dad used to give me a 50 50 mix of creosote and engine oil to paint on all sorts round the farm. Must work well cos there's gates I did more than 20 years ago still going stromg

Where can one get creosote?

 

Not been available for a good few years now, the stuff is now creosote substitute and ain't a patch on the old stuff.
