Gordon Bennett I wish I had never read this thread as I have now discovered it was Tony Bennett "Rags to Riches" December 1953!

I wish it could have been Purple Haze but I see the great British public in their ignorance only ever voted it to No 3 in the charts in spite of it being acknowledged now as one of the greatest singles of all time!

I looked at this and wondered if they had a chart when I was born and still not sure but found that Frankie Laine was the best seller with I Believe, June 1952

A Beatles hit for me! But reading this does make me realise that a, music was better in the 60's and 70's and b, I feel old!
