Struggling to get the clutch off my 550

When you jar the clutch off against compression you are not exerting a direct force on the internal components, when you insert somthing into the cylinder to lock the engine, and then use a socket or such to remove the clutch, you are now exerting a direct force onto the piston crown, connecting rod, cylinder head etc, which cannot ever be good practice.

And yet, Stihl recommend a piston stop on their saws and say never to use an impact wrench.

 

I must admit though that I never use a stop, sometimes use the starter cord method and invariably use an impact gun. But NEVER use a piston stop of any sort and an impact gun together.

That all makes sense, at least with the ms261 a standard socket fits and it is so quick compared with taking the spark plug out. I can see an impact gun and a piston stop ending up with a lot of damage.

As already has been said - there is no need to complicate this with special tools or piston stops - a sharp blow on a suitable chisel/drift/screwdriver is all it takes.

 

 

That's not always the case though.. But it's great when they do!
