Either way the idea of carrying extra gear in the back seats is alarming. Even in a mild head on crash those extra bits of kit become deadly projectiles

Yeah I know what you mean there but any heavy stuff(axe, wedges, felling bar and tools etc) go in a tool box under the seat or on the floor behind the front seats. The only thing put onto the rear seats is wet weather gear(need lots of this these days :( ) and sometimes the odd harness, rope etc. Saws allways go on the back of the van, which I suppose I shoulda explained a bit better.

i think that payload is more important than 3 extra seats for one extra man to be comfortable

Spoken like a true employer and not an employee :D I Reckon that you probably loose less than about 100kg by the time youve added the extra seats but deducted the extra weight of the body etc. With some decent lightweight sides you can easily get 5-6 cube in the back.

No its not the weight of the extra seats, larger cab, etc, that is the main problem, its load distribution, with a crew cab you end up with all the pay load over the rear axel,if you put 5-6 cub in you will be well over loaded IMHO.

My cabstar has 3 seats so therefore seats 3 men. a little squahed admittedley. my argument was that i was't going to buy a crew cab to have 3 empty seats. the space can be put to better use!:driver:

judge,

PTO chipper on a bedford tell us more please, is the PTO similar to the one I had on my RL to drive the winch?

No... the PTO's for mec winches come off (landy/Bedford) the transfer box and means that they run through the gear box, at low speed, so do not take the stick when driving a chipper and easly strip the gears clean:icon4: i've got a direct engine PTO box that fits between the clutch and gear box running drive through a blower box to the chipper
