Permit for collecting firewood

Can't name them but know someone who still collects mon-saleable deadwood from FC land. As he has an unofficial FC contact, a big bunch of keys, relevant common sense, a chainsaw and trailer. Living a 1/2 mile from an access point helps, as does knowing when there's going to be no FC personnel/officialdom present.

You can still get a permit from FC Scotland , but it's only for timber left after harvesting and you must cut by hand ( no chainsaw ) and no vehicles allowed either . So a bit pointless .

I know a guy that has one and this is what he told me a few weeks back .

Stopped it in Wales several years ago. I spoke to the FC chap and he said it was an 'H&S' issue.

You could trip over some logs and injure yourself

 

It's all a bit odd... they haven't closed down footpaths or banned mountain bikes from the same woodland - but of course they would never trip over a log...... would they!!!!????

I extract for our local FC so that piles of cut timber are not left for the fairies or fire brigade.

Thanks for the reply, if that's the rules then as you say it's poinless getting a permit you will struggle to get back the money you paid for it

Yes, we used to get permits, but only allowed to use hand tools! Land was very boggy and hard to carry stuff over, so we were not that bothered when permits finished- yes there is soo much waste!

Hi all I get a gleaning permit from my local fc office in Lincolnshire cost me £63 for the year only hand saws allowed and u carry out what u cut really lucky as that have the local collage go in to do there chainsaw courses so plenty there any thing from 6'6 to 30 foot

I'm not sure timber thats left behind can so easily be called a waste, in these days of manicured gardens, farms with very few uncultivated areas, dead wood is in pretty short supply, a lot of wildlife will be very grateful.
