Don't rate the BFGs on ice Jon

Few years back when we had a winter. Driving the landy with BFGs was doable but tricky on the ice (great when deep snow).

Wouldn't entirely agree there, my bfg at's don't want to let go on the ice, even if you try to make them. Stopping can be interesting but I'm far happier on bfgs than I am with general grabbers

It felt like the cresta run woodworks! Slightly down hill too so a nice heavy 130 is like a bobsleigh!!!!

Jon likes to reminisce about a small skid we had in Somerset .... mind you he was drunk on cider so he doesn't remember what happened really (ain't that right jon - all those gallons of cheddar valley you drank 😉😄)!!

I remember that event. And I,ve heard the Mendiplogs/eggsarascal version...sounded like a scene from a Hollywood Blockbuster but I am glad you were able to get air lifted from the cliff face ok:lol:

I don't remember it because I must have been knocked out from the force of the impact!

Few years back when we had a winter. Driving the landy with BFGs was doable but tricky on the ice (great when deep snow). Fitted my wifes little Peugeot 306 with some winter tyres and that was far superior on the ice than the landy. Got a spare set of rims so just swap wheels depending on the season.

Glad you and Yaffle are here to tell us of your tales on the ice.

Agreed lots of all terrain tyres are not marked for snow and ice either. Our 205 van went round an icey bend into our industrial every morning for weeks bit sideways sometimes but the Range Rover no chance straight on its roof.

Winter tyres are amazing especially when new that's how a lot of Europeans get about. There is a line of thought that the weather is wet and mild enough in the uk to keep the winter tyres on all year. If I did 20 k a year and a car I would fit in September and bin after a year.

They stay on at least 6 months of the year and stayed on all one year as it was so wet. Done a lot more than 20k miles in them and not worn out quite yet. Wish I discovered them years ago. Not as quiet on motorways but for kicking around wet or frozen lanes they are dogs danglies.

What do you recommend, winter tyre wise? I'm thinking of sticking some on my Hilux, hopefully would help with the wobbly back end, not nice in the Icy stuff!
