The end of firewood?

I'm a fairly honest guy (if I found a wallet I would hand it in etc). But I don't think HMRC really want the bother of processing millions of invoices over relatively small sums.

 

A couple of years back I took some metal to the scrappie and got £50, should I have put that on my tax return?

 

Strictly speaking it depends where your sourced the metal from.....if you bought the metal yourself to do a job, make some shelves etc etc and then sold the surplus at the end to the scrappie, then no its not "income". If you trawl the lanes looking for scrap metal, buy it off other people and then take it to the scrappie, the PROFIT on what you make is what you would pay tax on. You can also claim back the cost of your vehicle, fuel, road tax, etc etc as an expense to offset the profit.

 

No different to any other business. Same with ebay. If you sell odds and sods, its not a business. If you sell stuff, every day, every week, it is. There are always grey areas as where a personal disposal becomes a business transaction.

I'm interested in what exactly you think HMRC are going to do with the contents of this forum.

It's one thing to avoid paying taxes, but it should also be a crime to waste time and resources by sending them useless and (frankly) malicious reports.

End of firewood? I can never see it happening. Doom and gloom has been around since time immemorial. Some survive, others tread water, some flounder and fail. But there is always some kind of market.

Beer money traders, how much of a threat are they really? If you have a serious business set up they really are only taking the kind of client you don't need anyway. And linking this to evasion of taxes, how many beer money traders are in fact full timers topping their income up, ie fireman? (An example not an accusation)

How many businesses, now "reputable" have climbed there from slightly dodgy origins? I can think of some that have. Once they reach the heady heights of success, they then seek to scupper the new upcoming opposition by reporting them for the very practises they themselves used. I liken it to free-climbing a tree, then reporting the others for not using correct rope access procedures.

Honesty the best policy? Fine in theory, in real world business it just doesn't happen. Even the likes of Tesco being proven guilty of less than honest goings on. The unwritten rule seems to be just don't get caught out.

take a look through the posts on this forum not just this particular topic people openly admitting to selling for some beer money imo beer money is undeclared money maybe you see it differently that's your prerogative, a malicious report would be to send in someone's details you know to be honestly trading.

 

what's wasting time in reporting people cheating the system?

 

as to what they would do with this forum I doubt very much they would even look at it, but see how fast it silenced these honest people.

To be honest, if your attitude in the real world is anything like it is on this thread, then I'm not surprised.

If word gets around locally that you have the HMRC on speed dial it wont help your business much either.

You need to look at YOUR business and see what the best way forward is, and stop concerning yourself with what others are doing/not doing.

I agree. I've been following this thread since it started, it's now not about the end of firewood, it is now getting to be a bitter rant against anyone who dare not agree with you. Many years ago when my grandad ran a company one of his friends who also ran a local company said to him about another man they knew who was doing some less than legal things, my grandad said to his mate that rather being worried about what the guy was doing he should concerntrait on looking after his own company. This has stuck with me and I now follow this advice. I really hope you haven't ruined the spirit of arbtalk with your call to HMRC about this forum.

You've decided to post the contents of this thread (based on what I can see), because people have not approved of your comments. In essence you have as they say "spat the dummy out of the pushchair". Personally I don't care, I work almost exclusively for government bodies and never get paid in cash, all the choices we make in life are our own, but I would say this.

I've come across many people in my life and the ones who complain about unfair practice are usually OK, and just wish to see a fair working environment for all. The ones who spend time grassing up (sorry, but that's what it is) others, are normally trying to bring in a third party because they don't have what it takes to be a success on their own merits.
