Fair Play Sainsbury's! Respect! Awesome!

That probably needs to be put into perspective imo

The RBL will receive 50p from every £1 bar sold of Belgian chocolate made in the town of Ypres.

Be interesting to see just how much that will amount to, although any amount is good, but can't help feeling that will help soften the critics of the add.

Sorry I don't really agree with it and feel it's a very disrespectful marketing ploy.

Sainsbury's Christmas advert 2014: Don't be cynical about Sainsbury's advert | Metro News

It's a risk, but obviously with 20 years of the RBL's blessing.

Look at this another way

The 50% sum is going to be considerable (I assume). If that was given as a one off donation to the RBL without the film, most people would think ''well done Sainsburys''.

The fact the film is fronting the donation obviously has a mixed reaction but it wasn't really product placement which is you what you get with John Lewis & M&S at this time of year.

The film bought a lump to my throat, which is what the makers intended of course but I didn't suddenly think ''F**k you Sainsburys for trying to make money on the back of the fallen''. My thought were more ''Good film which will make money for a much needed Charity''.

This year was different being the 1914 Anniversary, but the RBL normally only get one week a year to make a request for donations. In this country the term ''Charity Fatigue'' is often used. So many well deserving causes asking for your money - we all see the mix of the TV coverage for Children in Need every year with a massive campaign via the BBC both on TV & Radio, mixed with the latest world crisis asking for help - it never seems to end.

I support the RBL as ex serving RAF Regt. The Help For Heroes Charity whilst amazing has taken some of that limited public donation away from the RBL - if only they could amalgamate and work together but that's another story. So many similar charities all doing similar things but not quite meeting in the middle, it happens all the time.

So what am I saying? ''In this 100th year of the 1914 Anniversary, if the RBL get a chance to get more money than normal in this charity fatigued country - well done Sainsburys, nice film''.

Every film, documentary and comedy ever produced about the wars have been done for commercial gain.

Many have been disrespectful in one way or another. Many have been extremely offensive about the 'other side' yet have been watched by millions for entertainment.

But I will bet that very little revenue from these has ever made its way to RBL.

This ad is respectful to both sides and can offend nobody except those who want to find fault with the supermarket giants for any reason at all.

I think it is a great Christmas offering and has well surpassed John Lewis this year.

Good ad..being ex forces myself i cant emagine what it would have been like. Lest we forget.

Indeed. A lot of younger folk won't know the story of the christmas day truce so if the film does nothing else but remind people of the human side of conflict it gets my vote....

Sainsbury's are massive supporters of the charity I work for as a volunteer.

Helping the homeless and addicted turn their lives around (me being one of them).

They provide free food to all our centres and provide us with many opportunities to raise much needed funds in their stores... Such as bag packing and carol singing.at Christmas when our other charitable businesses are a bit slow. (Only our tree works does well :) )

I personally know the person who developed the poppy appeal at corporate Sainsburys, I can vouch that they are not cynical money grabbers.

Sainsburys historically have a good social responsibility ethos.

I would much rather support a supermarket that has a genuine concern and shows practical support for many good causes.

I for one wish Sainsburys every success in both their charity work and their commercial operations.

It's a shame that more large commercial organisations don't operate with the same responsibility.

Well done Sainsburys!! :)

Thanks,

Timon

In my opinion a fine add, and they are donating to a fine charity, good work, looks like they got the idea from the book, written from the German side, 'All quiet on the Western Front', by Erich Maria Remarque, here is a link to the man, Erich Maria Remarque - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The book itself is well worth a read at this poignant time...
