Get in there with some shims. Shut the door. Shims in the spring coils to prop the spring open (long). Open the door. Hook the springs where they need to go. Pull out shims.

Loosen pivot bolt enough to let the catch stopping it going over centre (you can see the line in the paint) go overcentre. Hook springs on , latch the catch back under , do up the pivot bolt

What you need is 2 large cable ties and 2 reasonably big pry bars. make loops with the cable ties and stick the pry bar through the loop and lever the 2 springs down at once. Now will come the trickey part and the need for 3 or more hands while holding the 2 extended springs insert the bracket to hold them! After job completed count fingers!!

Looks like you need to hook both springs on together. Bit of flat steel,drill two holes same spacing as the springs are apart. Wire through each hole onto each spring

Third hole in the bottom of the flat with a loop of wire to put your foot in and press down to tension the springs, then hook the clip. Piece of cake.

 

If you need more pull put a lever through the bottom loop

Wear a face shield and use wire not cable ties

Bit of thick tin 1.6 or so Three holes in a triangle takes two minutes and makes the job easy.

Sometimes in maintenance you need to make special tools.

I think I would bend the stop strap (which prevents the lid going back to far) away from the steel it hits, this will allow the lid to go over centre and you can the bring it back with the mechanism going up instead of down, which will move the springs down to the attachment point.

 

Once the springs are hooked on I think a well placed foot and movement of the lid would push the mechanism back the correct way, them bend the stop strap back into place.

Turn the double hook over and put one spring on put the flat blade of a screwdriver (biggest you have) through to loop of the spring and on to the end of the other side of the hook. Tension the spring by moving the screwdriver, the loop will slide down it and onto the hook.

Complete using a combination of all your suggestions. It was the biggest heaviest Christmas cracker puzzle I've completed! Thanks for the help. I did nearly cut myself in two at the hip during this so I quickly learned to prop the lid! Cheers all.
