Whats this wood?

We have been looking at a big lump of timber washed down from the winter floods. The EA would like it pulled out as it could cause a log jam on a bridge further down river so am looking at pulling it out. Any ideas what it could be? It looks like a massive lump of elm or maybe Ash. Its difficult to tell as the bark has come off. If it is something high grade it will probably be planked up. If its a scabby poplar then the log pile it is.

it's a bit hard to tell from that mate.

 

cut in to it and i can help you but i need to see heartwood.

 

 

as it is going bu the fact that it's straight and how the end looks i'd say either oak or beech, probably beech.

Will have to pull it out and take a slice off to find out.

I think you could be right. Looks like there is creosote residue.

Hi it does not look like elm i pulled some elm from out of a river and was completely diffrrent but do haul it out and cut it ,it may have some cool colouring inside post some picks when you cut be good to see iinside

When I first saw it I thought telegraph pole but did not say coz felt a bit stupid ! Glad some one else thought it too . So what are telegraph poles made from ? Firs and pines I would guess .

If its telegraph pole it'll have markings on it ....

Dont they carve depth lines and stuff on them too

looks like a pine to me! i reckon the black mark is staining from sitting in mud

definately softwood. almost definately firewood (but not for this year)
