I have a chipper which is used infrequently and a mate said; well change your insurance and offer it for rent. He is making sense I know, but my tools get looked after and last as a result. For instance on a wet day the chipper hopper + feed chute and saw bars get dried and oiled before going away. Even the truck gets wax oyled every year. Can't bring myself to do it. If a real mate borrows something they know it comes back as lent or is fixed/replaced and I reciprocate. Hate people abusing other peoples hard earned belongings....don't get me started on stealing!

Wow that is keen. On a wet day all I want to do is get chipper locked away and off home or pub. Fair play to you though.

I only loan tools to trusted colleague who know how to use em and make it clear if you bend it you mend it!

That's how I roll mate.

Typically my groundie Stevo has borrowed two hedgecutters at weekends for family jobs that have shat a throttle cable and drive shaft respectively. He was using both machines for me flat out during the weeks preceding, and he's on top of his maintenance.

He paid for the parts, we fitted them together.

Unlucky for him really, as they would have surely failed on my next job anyway (both had had a lot of use).

This thread is a sore subject . As my new 550 came as a result of lending a mate my 350. He happily sent it back to me knowing that he blew it to pieces and kept his mouth shut. I prefer to supply my own tools rather than use the gaffers because I would hate to break someone elses equipment. Shame others don't have the same view

Watched my dad ( rough as hell with tools ) use every one of my grandads wood chisels as screwdrivers - snapped every one off - so much for toos that had last a lifetime

Then every screwdriver as pry bar - so all bent

Then anything he could lay his hands on as hammer .....

He thought it was hysterically funny to break my stuff ........yanked gearlever out of my mini when I was a kid ......

ive worked for myself for the past 15yrs, (self employed) work got a tad slack so started doing work for a local comp, just three day a week (still SE)

ive allways bought me own kit, bought the best I can, and maintain it.

anyway im the only SE bloke on this comp, the other five are on the books.

it really pisses me of when they come out with "oh it aint mine feck it" then they winge that the gaffers don't look after out or repair it.

these "lads" are in there 40s and fifties.

just my little moan, w*****s the lot of them.

Our Palax 600 Combi has an electric motor as well as the pto drive.

I was setting it up in the yard and had just plugged in the extension lead and was walking back round the corner and heard that my 45 year old helper, who had already operated the machine many times before, had started work.

Unfortunately the extension lead 3 phase was wired to reverse the motor.

He was pushing this bit of wood against the circular saw with all his might, wondering why it was not cutting in reverse.

You would have thought that the fact that the conveyor belt was running backwards was a clue.

Result= lost about fifty teeth from the blade which had just been re-tipped.

All happened in few seconds and he is helping somebody else now.
