Bigger saw

Hi folks being new to this type of work I am looking to get a proper saw with a bit of grunt to it. I currently own a Husqvarna 455 rancher with a 15 inch bar but am looking at getting a bigger / faster saw for felling and x-cutting bigger logs. I was thinking a 372xp with a 18 inch bar but would welcome any other advice.

I would have thought a 372 would easily run an 18" bar, my 365 runs a 20" no problem & it can be modded to a 372 if you look at some of the other posts regarding the 365.

 

A 461 as Jon says is another good choice (Ive used a 460 & lots of power) & I know he likes the 461 perhaps consider a Sugi Hara bar if its going to get plenty of use.

 

For more 'grunt' a 660/661 with 25" or a 390 on 24 should suffice

372 with an 18" will go like a stabbed rat. It's a good choice since if you need the ability to cut bigger stuff you can just buy a 24" bar for the 372 (which it will pull comfortably) rather than having to buy a bigger saw.

 

I have a 357 that's been ported by a member on here: Spud. It's also a maniac.

I have a 372 ( ported by spud ) and it lives on a 24" . So as above 18 / 20 / 24 all good on a 372 . ( mine is pre Xtorque by the way )

372 on an 18" works well and balances fairly nicely for felling/snedding all day with on bigger stuff. 15" works well too though uts a bit of weight on the back handle which some people don't like (but I do).

 

Mine got spudded a few months ago too and it's gone from good to great.

Got an ms 460 ported by spud and it is fantastic, pulls a 25 no problem lives on an 18 most of the time and on the 18 cuts as fast as you can move the saw. You may be able to pick a second hand one up reasonably cheap, even before porting it was good so may be an option if your budget doesn't run to a new saw.

I use a ms660 with a 20" for ringing up big stuff and its a monster. I'd recommend it.
