Why didn't he put it down after the first time it bit him? I would!

Found some when I was a kid, put them in a sand castle bucket and took them to show Mum. Turned out she doesn't much like snakes. :D

we knew a guy who tried to hit one with a Mattock and the adder wrapped itself around it so that when he lifted the mattock up again... it was hissing at him above his head...stupid boy!

Bit like a wasp sting I'm told, just depends on individuals reaction, wasp stings can have serious consequences for some.

Not very deadly wee beasties really.

dependant on size and time of year, anything of around 2ft in length deserves a wide berth, especially in the hot weather when there most active, seem to be more common in the heathland and forest type areas of the country, I used to catch them when I was a teen working on the farm, a little respect for them goes a long way, and according to new research, the "harmless" slow worm, or grass snake, is actually venomous as well

The job I'm on at the moment involves putting a fence over a stretch of very 'undisturbed' moorland, the farmer cut a path through the bracken and brambles with a topper for the fenceline and the place is riddled with adders, I saw several yesterday and A)regretted wearing shorts and B) maybe sure my dog stayed in the tractor when he wasn't being supervised. I do like to see them though- beautiful creatures. I also have seen lots of lizards and frogs there too, and was frequented by a nasty looking hornet whilst having my lunch which made me shift pretty quick!

I picked one up when I was 10 and visiting friends in Epsom. Always had a love of reptiles and hadn't seen an adder before. A swift bite, followed by a swifter visit to the local hospital ensued. It was all quite funny (doctors and nurses rushing around me, calling London hospitals for advice) until I started to projectile vomit and blacked out.

Stayed in overnight, monitored but no anti venom administered. Right hand swollen to 3 times normal size for about 6 weeks. Lots of pretty colours and unable to do any school work for the duration!
