Thinking outside the box...

Iv got a car sat on my drive, it's not worth much, it's got no MOT, I was thinking about weighing it in. However, theres no MOT due to chassis rust. The car runs fine.

Iv never been much of a mechanic but I think I'd like to take the engine out of it and use it to power something useful at my yard.

Any ideas about a project for me to undertake.

Can I use it to power a hydraulic log splitter?

Looking forward to seeing some suggestions..

Take the bell housing off and bolt/attach a cork screw splitter to the fly wheel ?

More torque if you run through the gearbox or driveshaft.

I think a single Vee belt will manage around 15hp so run a pump off the alternator drive.or redrill the bell housing to take a 2P pump with an adaptor cut off the gearbox input shaft, if it's diesel otherwise I wouldn't think it worthwhile.

I've got a newly rebuilt (that is never used since it was fully done 15 years ago) peugeot 504 engine sitting in my garage which I have been considering using to drive a generator head.

Agreed . Torque is essential for cork screw splitters . If you have enough Nm then they are unstoppable and will chew through anything . Leave it ticking over in second or third then ? ..........

In spite of the toaster/fan jokes (made a lot of us smile anyway)you would have a reasonable amount of torque through the gearbox and diff. You could use an extra gearbox for more torque or power something direct from the engine. However governing engine speed might be a problem. Petrol power would make it expensive to run as well. To be quite honest I think it would be much more trouble than its worth.

I would have thought you would be better off selling for spares if you can.

Do they still do banger racing, might be a bit scary in a saxo especially if rusty.Interesting to watch

though.
