the climbing comps are the only ones where your competitors are helping you while your competing its less of a comp and more of a social gathering as drew stated before.

people of all abilities come along and have fun learning stuff and getting encouraged by the more experienced guys.

the connections made at these events can be super beneficial work wise , you can meet people from overseas and spend a week working abroad etc whats not to like ? . congrats by the way mog , nice one.

I'm not a tree climber but I am a rock climber, (I don't get paid to climb rocks). Now on ocassion, I have been to an indoor wall and have watched other climbers, learners, proficient & pro alike. But only during a rest between actually climbing routes.

 

Sure, I've seen the odd TV program of amazing climbers doing amazing routes and exclaimed "Wow". I've even learned subtle technique here or there. But all in all, I've never been to watch a climbing competition. So travelling 200mls return or maybe even each way, just so to watch a bunch of people who've been training for 6mths. beforehand, just to shave a second off a given move, fills me with dread. Plus I don't do new kit/gear just because, "Anodised gold with purple, is just so last month." If I buy a piece of kit or gear, it's because I have need of it. And it gets used until it wears out beyond being affordable to repair. Or in a few cases, when the item reaches its manufacturer's safe limit.

 

If there were a competition within say 20mls. each way, (and there never has been, regardless of where I've been in the country) I may well go to see it. Different people climb for different reasons. It might be their job, to be able to compete, a personal challenge, it's on their bucket-list or to watch and be watched. But for me, regardless of who I climb with, though I mostly free-climb on my own, the reason is because I like climbing. It's me and the rock or tree in some cases. If someone else could climb the same route a second quicker and be in better shape at the end, well that's ok. But don't expect me to travel miles and miles to watch you doing it.

I've attended a few of the comps over here (not recently mind) there's comps for newbies (not just students but those experienced who don't want to make a tit of themselves in the "pro" tree) that's a plus point I think

I done the one mark mentioned at jonsies, that was cool, very relaxed, no elitist feeling, being hungover diddnt matter. That's the only comp I've ever entered as I don't see anything in it or me.

However, prizes would attract me, like 1st prize: a grand to spend at the show, 2nd: chainsaw, 3rd: access rope, best newbie wins a climbing saw, quickest rescue gets an arb aid kit. Every entrant gets a limited edition/branded helmet or something

 

It needs to be held at an established POPULAR arb show, and with good notice (once again over here its 4weeks notice which just isn't enough-I for one travel alot and buy flight tickets 2-3 months in advance)

surely its the taking part that more important than winning! and wouldn't it be better if everyone got something rather just a few.

Id want it worth my while to take part, taking part and getting a limited edition freebie would make me feel special, and the chance to win something decent and of value would really get me intrested.

 

I don't feel the need to prove my climbing abilities to anyone, so there needs to be something material in it.

I get stressed out trying to hit a high point with a customer and a work mate watching me. The thought of doing it with 13 or more of my peers and a load of spectators watching fills me with dread! But then I am terrible with a throw line.

I check the forum a fair amount and had no idea it was going on. I think it needs to be advertised more and incorporated into another, larger show or trade fair which people are prepared to travel for.

Wtf?? Do you race F1 cars? No? Oh so you think you're the best driver ever then?

 

Just because I don't feel the need to prove my abilities don't assume I think I'm the best? I know I'm a productive climber, I know that, and I learn through working with other productive climbers, trade shows with like minded individuals, here even.

 

I'm not going to waste 3 days just because some guy in the internet says so. There needs to be a good incentive, that's all.

That would be a great idea !! It narrows the odds and as long as I win a big fat prize for coming second I'm living the dream..

I see the learning stuff but honestly I have picked up more subbing in better climbers than myself than watching comps.
