My mistake, thought the OP was talking about big saws; note to self, read posts more thoroughly before commenting.....

He was talking about heavy saws - hence the title. Top handled saws are easy to carry up slung from the harness.:001_rolleyes:

Yep me too, didn't read that properly!

although most of the time if you using a big saw then surely you'll have just finished with the top handle and therefore have to send that down before having the bigger saw sent up? unless going back up the tree after a break in which case you'd usually get the saw sent up rather than drag it up with you...

Also when your up there clip it onto your climbing line carabiner instead of your harness, then the climbing line is taking the full weight of the saw and it's not hanging off your harness dragging it down round your arse.

But have a care that there is a break away in the system. If the bar pinches in the wood you don't want the saw and a chunk of timber hanging off your rope and anchor point.

That would be natural selection in action :001_smile:

Brilliant answer, concise and absolutely spot on!

It's also just caused me to blow coffee all over the computer!

If you are on a big dismantle and are at the stage of rigging off larger branch work before blocking down, take the saw off of you link it to a branch next to the wood you are going to cut off. Go climb and install lowering rope then go back to your saw n LOP it off. Advance the tree and repeat.

Imo you don't need to haul around your saw to all places in the tree. Plan your route and work stations.

work clever not needlessly hard. Energy conservation and a good working position are valued bunch of tools when lugging big saws.
