The fronts a mess as shown, any ideas to tidy it up a little? do second hand spares come up for sale often?

Paid £50.

Get in there with a grinder and trim it off smooth and ignore it . Does not affect the function of the mower , in fact it might work better ....

This was my first thought ^^. As you say makes no difference and is the lazy option which i like :)

Noticed the blades need a sharpen, any science to these or just give a tickle on the bench grinder?

Glass fiber maybe.

The skirt does serve a function, in that it acts as a secondline defence in stopping stones being thrown forwards, so maybe best to just plate it over. Simply done.

As for sharpening, yes tickle it up with a grinder. Get an even angle of around 30 degrees and grind both sides evenly to preserve balance.

When the ground edge has reached 13mm in from its original line the blade should be replaced.

If the wings are worn at all sharp then the blade should also be replaced.

Balance the blade before refitting

I have 2 of em, they are great mowers, work good if the grass is a bit wet too if the blades are kept sharp.

Purchase a new second hand deck on ebay - I know a possible source for if you cannot find one though - give me a PM if needed and I will enquire for you.

Good mowers - had mine 3 years, second hand, still rocking it better than a mates new one!
