A little yes, at the time I had the rifle zeroed at around 350yards as i didnt often go much below that and worked it on the mill dots to 400,450 and 500 yards. We picked the fox up at around 300 yards but I believe it was a touch lamp shy and ran to where it believed was a safe distance

Yes. The 22 was a cider induced typo. I have since learned that it is possible to use an air rifle over 12ft/lb if it is registered on your FAC

I realise that, to be honest I'm not sure I could make that shot again, I surprised my self a little. I had shot targets out to 500 plenty of times before but never live quarry. It was a really still night and I guess I just felt I couldn't fail really. He was sat down facing me at the time and didn't look as though he was gonna bolt if you know what I mean

I just think there are less cruel ways to deal with problem animals. Better constructed pens and fences for 'prey' animals etc, better land management. Obviously im aware the gun people on here will disagree, because its probably one of their hobbies and thats their thing. But I wouldn't shoot an animal for the same reason I wouldn't shoot a human. There's bloody loads of problem humans too haha.

 

The big cat in the uk thing, wasnt there a massive exotic pet trade in the past and when keeping them became illegal, people released them?

It's worth pointing out that I also keep chickens - which were out in the garden but the fox still went upstairs in the house. Maybe sick, maybe injured or maybe likes the smell of baby milk or cat food but it's best to get rid as I'm sure it was at the cat flap last night.

Sounds like a pest controller needs to be contacted! There bold and they don't give up, in a way they are much the same as thieves. Once they get the idea in their head and they want something spending money on deterants will only slow them down, if they want it they will get it.

Totally agree, If anything came into my house and showed aggression to a member of my family it would get the same treatment however many legs it had, so on this I agree with you. BUT, regardless of two or four legs, it would deserve to be shot IMO, so we may differ in opinion about it not solving anything.
