... By the end of day 1 a couple of marshalls had asked if I was using Castrol R as the exhaust smelt 'distinctive'...

I used ride and marshal old rules trials. You could always tell engines on Castrol. As they went by, the smell of fried bacon was unmistakeable.

Probably put in a liter- topped it up from low to high mark.

Its the 300tdi, what would you reccomend?

 

Reckon you'll get away with a litre but bear in mind an o&f change within 3k. 15W is fine but 30 a bit thin on the hot end so 15W40 would give better engine durability. If sticking with mineral you want to go for Texaco URSA 15W40 SHPD Super TD if you can get it; it's a CH-4 rated oil which is v high end for a mineral and a 20L drum works out much cheaper than 5L here and 5L there of halfords this, duckhams that!

 

Think I got my last lot from Watsons; delivered FOC; use it in tractors too.

We use 15/40 in our 300tdi's

Personally I would dump it out as soon as you can and change the filter, you aren't looking at a great expense.

Lesson to be learnt "never mess with the oil drums" I once put chain oil in a brake fluid container when I was young and stupid, yep you guessed it :(

Well, changed it this afternoon, seemed to come out as normal, still glad I've changed it for piece of mind, Sorry TCD it was 15/40 not 30 I was using. I was always told no need to run semi synthetic in a basic engine like the 300, so iv'e always just used good quality mineral oil changed every 4000, no probs so far.

Cheers for everyone's input- glad I'm not the only one to have done it by the sounds of it.
