What additions would you like to see on Arbtalk

A section for students/ new starters to the industry with some basic information on progression routes, training requirements, courses. Basic kit etc.

I know students should get this info from their course but some feedback from the industry giants on here as well.

Review of the most common pieces of kit a bit like like amazon with a star rating system. positive and negative feedback. A long thread on chainsaw trousers can have lots of opposite views so the feedback system means you could skip to the negative opinions to find out what the issues are for example.

Separate Stihl and Husky threads, not to mention the other brands available.

You could do a list of respected members of certain disciplines such as Spud and co for modding and repair. A list of go to guys (and gals) who agree to help.

Calculator for estimating log weights etc.

Properties of tree species such as uses and firewood burning stats. Would help the just cut a bit of walnut what's it good for threads?

I know alot of this information is floating about on here. Just a few tabs at the top with some collected info similar to the knot and fungi stuff.

I don't think the above suggestions will have a negative effect on discussion. It might just reduce a few duplicated threads.

IMO the hard work that is put in to the site is very useful and the advice on kit decisions has been invaluable as has the links to the suppliers.

Hope that helps.

A like button would be cool. Maybe a rep system too, there's plenty on here who give good advice for absolutely nothing and it would be nice to thank them in a small way.

I second that.

I am sure that those of us who try to advise, on whatever subject, are not looking for any praise, but sometimes you wonder if any one has benefited.

And then you wonder "why bother?"

Better Christmas raffle prizes, I only won 2t shirts

No, joking aside, the suppliers to this industry need to realise that a forum such as this, plays a vital role in keeping users updated, and can change their opinion of retailers goods, and after sales abilities and warranty responses.

Stihl, Husqvarna, Echo, Dolmar, and the others, should be invited to comment on topics and respond to comments such as "my T540XP anti vibration mounts have failed again".

Would it not be nice to post a topic "my 560XP anti vibration mounts have fallen apart after 2 months" and get the response from Husqvarna UK " phone us on this number and we will sort it out"?

These companies have multi million pound advertising budgets, the information they can get from this forum is crucial to their sales. How many people does it take to say "modern Stihl saws are plastic crap" to change the sales numbers?

This forum is a huge marketing resource, that should not be underestimated, more suppliers and retailers should contribute.

Saying that, after winning a Arborwear shirt in the raffle, I have bought 3 pairs of trousers and a jacket, so their marketing worked.:001_smile:

It would be interesting to know if the main suppliers are actively monitoring and posting, I am sure that retailers such as F.R. Jones and Honey Brothers are very grateful for this site, and would think that it is almost getting to the stage that they could be considered foolish if they did not monitor and contribute to this forum.

The sale of "Sugi-Hara" products would be far less if not for this forum, so seller take note and contribute.

The people/ suppliers you mention do take an active part in the forum, particularly the last one. Check out the milling and alaskan mill forums. Rob's contributions have been fantastic with regard to milling info:001_smile:

I hear what you are saying, and yes it would be nice for some of the big players to join in...but what you have to understand is that a lot of these big companies have a blanket ban on social media, to the point that it would be a sackable offence for an employee. And I can understand that...you only have to look at how many people get in trouble on the likes of twitter. A company representative only has to make one blunder, no matter how small, to cause huge repercussions.
