Its noted as being a random genetic abnormality of the growing tip of a plant, associated with many genus of trees through to cacti

 

But can be caused by the bacterium Rhodococcus fascians

 

Here on prunus

Never witnessed it on sycamore so i'm going to keep my eye out for it for research purposes (obviously!!!) Might take all day tomorrow!!!. I've pruned bits off the other plants mentioned with most of the plants being quite young. Also seen a few plants at nurseries with this.

That's quite a specimen as most I have come across look like just two stems fused together. definitely worth keeping.

Lucky number 6...

 

This hangs beside my desk - was cut from some Sycamore brash doing pollarding last year.

 

Knew it would come in handy for arbtalk eventually :laugh1::thumbup:
