Desperate measures

I'm thinking of taking the wheels off my chipper whilst it's in storage over the Xmas break but will it keep the thieving scumbags at bay as we have had a few major break ins in the area lately.

Has anyone done this before.

Our chipper was nicked without a tow hitch. The gits lifted it onto the back of a truck with a hiab... I HATE the fact that I have to spend hours every week and hundreds if not thousands of pounds securing our kit. The lengths people go to to steal stuff amazes me. If they put their minds to working I bet they could make a decent honest living...

I was also thinking of spending a few nights in my lock up to show the scumbags that humans can go through the chipper too

Take the wheels and nuts home with you though and reinforce the lock up doors and windows. We put an angle iron frame and a chequer plate door inside the wooden door on my friend's unit on a nearby estate. The outside door was done a couple of times but they never got through the second one.

Taking the wheels off is good. Removing the tow bar isn't that good. As with the tow ball locks they can just tie it up and tug it to a quiet spot where they can get to work with the grinders in piece. Or just lift it away.

 

Make a presence over the winter break, go and visit the lock up now and again. And move a few things outside so it looks like there is someone there. A nice drive out and visit on Xmas day never goes a miss either.

I agree.. keep a close eye on your kit and lockup. theives assume folk are off enjoying xmas. I know this the hard way...

Fill the petrol tank with diesel Ross.

Caravan on the farm next door had one wheel removed, a clamp on the other wheel and a locked hitch, last Weds mid morning it got towed away by what is thought to be a Citron Xsara. Mid Northants.
