Hiccup with Pickup

Our transit tipper had some chip on, when the guys went to tip off the tipper went up about a foot and suddenly dropped like a stone. The ram had pushed its way out of its frame and mangled all the bracing .It always struggles to tip because the greedy boards take most of the load up behind the cab rather than evenly across the bed as it would have been designed for. Could have been nasty. Went to get it off and all the bushes are seized solid so had to attack it with the hot spanner. Got the frame in on the bench for rebuild so I will beef it up and post some pickys of it.

Mine just ripped off the cross member it attached to and bent the ram. Over loaded with soil

the ram looks like it needs a service now you have it out worth getting it refurbed. that may be why it struggles lifting rams tired

Is that the normal ram position for a transit sort of cantiliver action? mine just goes up 4 sections

depends on the tipper builder, some use a cantilever system and some are straight multisection rams

Harsh is/was the best known cantilever design.

Claimed to prevent the tipped bodywork twisting.

My only comment on those photos as posted is that in either case the ram is very far back.

To get a steeper tipping angle I appreciate.

But putting absolutly tremendous strains on the bodywork and tipping mechanism.

A longer, thinner ram furthur forward would achieve the same with much less stress.

But harder to house within the confines of a van type chassis.

I never liked the cantilever system, I used to have to lift the back body and try and get the switch at the same time to help it tip. I had the same as Essex after and it was brilliant!

I'm sure you'll soon fix it, beef it up and make it better Bob:thumbup1:

That is a much better set than the contraption on this transit, that set up is under an old tipper body in the yard so if this gives anymore grief I will swap it over. All these rams have to go this far back because ford have fitted the cross member in the way of the proper location , seems like a fundamental mistake.

Anyway straightened out the frame spun up some new steel bushes twice the size of the originals, some new pins and brass bearings on the lathe welded it back together and shoved it all back in . All good again.

bit late now but greasable pins/bushes are best for that application
