Mandela was needed to hold SA together after the Apartheid regime was (rightly) removed...the problem was..he refused to renounce violence, (he was a highly motivated terrorist with strong Marxist convictions). Amnesty international refused to support him because of this...and the SA Govt offered him his freedom several times - but he refused). He became a figurehead and did a fine job of leading SA through difficult and potentially extremely violent times. The transformation from terrorist to leader was done by the Western media, who did such a magnificent job, he is revered today for all his good deeds and quotes...but his murderous past has been airbrushed from history.

I thought i was alone in thinking that he was a terrorist. I wont speak ill of the dead and as was said earlier he changed to political means of defeating aparteid but would he have been imprisoned for 30 years if he hadnt of been involved the way he was and may have brought about change earlier?but we can never know of course.

I hope SA doesnt spiral into a worse state than it is already with his passing.

indeed Gary, I really hope South Africa remains at peace...the power of our own media never ceases to amaze me...from frog to prince....at least we didn't make him an MP..unlike some of our other 'frogs'....

I often judge other people by who they associate with. Two truly horrible persons come to mind, Castro, Gaddafi. Unlike Rhodesia which became Mozambique the shear volume of Natural resources bestowed upon SA along with the need to keep industry moving forward convinced Mandela to keep as much of the old SA in place to maintain a stable government, economy. Although Mandela was a Communist he understood the power of the purse and, I believe was under no illusion that if not played with most parties needs met, things could have really gone Very South in a hurry. My 2 cents worth.
