My wife loves our 05 plate Jeep Cherokee 2.8crd.

Built like a tank, massive transmission, 161hp but not too large. Fantastic motorway car.

It has certainly impressed me. Its a true off roader, will tow 2.8 t, weighs nearly 2t itself.

If you're happy enough with petrol, Grand Vitara. Absolutely bulletproof (like all Suzuki's), newest ones very civilised on tarmac but unlike most still a proper off-roader, and sensible money.

Subaru legacy tourer average 45mpg not your usual 4x4 but great with plenty of room

This sort of vehicle would be ideal for most people unless you need to tow big trailers on regular basis. 4x4 economical nippy and reliable.

We love our freelander2 but they are expensive and hold their money. The skoda octavia scout is a really nice motor and excellent value for money, not to many around second hand though...

I know it doesn't quite fit the tow car bracket but the fiat panda has impressed me. After that I'd probably go for a legacy and then if you want something bigger the outlander. There's always a golf 4motion but it's silly money.....

Our normal car (mainly because I'm tight) is a Peugeot partner teepee with the outdoor pack, limited slip diff, on a run I'll get any where between 55-65 mpg but it'll never drop below 45mpg even if I drive it like a youth. It's quite nice to drive too. Snow tyres for winter and a set of chains the only thing that'll stop it is a big drift. Was very impressed.

We have a 57 plate outlander' 2 kids 2terriers loads of room for all the gear. My wife gets on fine with it. Smaller foot print than a Mondrian estate . 2 seats in boot on ours is handy. But you would not want to sit in them for long.36/38mpg .nice looking motors not many about.did have a new turbo fitted on warranty. Been towing with anorak vw . Never drive any of these truck 4x4s before. It was soo bumpy,my Mits tows a ifor of logs lovely. Could do with rear camera
