Things you find under the bonnet, well I hope you don't find this anyway. Funny thing is the van ran ok, anyone else lost a battery like this?

overheated battery. how old is it?

 

normally gets hot first and warm to the touch.

 

bet that made a nice pop.

 

have purposely exploded a battery at college to show what can happen, not something i would want to be around.

 

if it didnt overheat i would give the charging system and earth points a good going over, just incase.

That hasn't overheated or boiled dry, it has exploded, charging batteries makes hydrogen, if it cant get away and you add a source of ignition you get an almighty boom.

Last time I saw one like that was when I was welding in the workshop and didnt realise my brother had put a battery on charge until there was a loud bang and the side of my face went tingly from the battery acid

This has had having flash backs off an accident at college when a 24volt truck battery exploded left me in hospital for 3 days burns and some scars.

Nasty things still make me nervous jump starting cars
