Couple of thoughts.

 

Silkys i believe are carbon steel so wouldn't last five minutes in the harsh marine environment - rusty blades H&S issue?

 

Try a good dive knife. Serrated one side and straight the other with a line cutter built in and a proper marine grade stainless.

Fitted in a click in scabbard and can be strapped to arm/leg/clipped to clothing and secured by curly lanyard.

 

If i trust mine 100m under water it should be good enough anywhere

My river knife fell apart the other day and I've been needing to get a pruning saw to carry canoeing anyway. Pocketboy to do both rope cutting and wood cutting is the obvious choice but it will rust. Who does stainless pruning saws?

They get dirty/rusty anyway. Just need a hot soapy wash and a light covering of GT 85

My Gomtaro isn't rusty. It can sit around the kitchen drying and then is convenient to wipe a bit of veg oil on. Less sure how easy it will be to stay on top of a folder that lives with wet boating gear.

Try the folding ones Rich- I keep one in my vehicle- nice and safe and is often used - Maybe some grease/vaseline to keep rust free. I could see it going through a thick rope piece of cake.

I'd second the idea of keeping it covered with grease. I WD40 my Zubat after every use and it still develops a bit of surface rust. Keeps it sharp much longer though. Seawater would kill it in no time.

 

It would be interesting to see if Silky would send you a selection to try out.

 

... then see if Gransfors Bruks will send you 'one of each' and get on to Stihl for a MS460-R made of all stainless that will run on fuel oil
