Seasoned cordwood - lack of planning?

On topic - yes Mark lots of people have been approaching me recently for cord wood, even end users who want to buy lower priced cord and process it themselves for burning wood for this year. I have considered buying in an artic as im sure I could sell it but dont have the storage space.

Anybody serious about selling logs will be taking green timber now for processing summer 14. The timber they have processed will have been bought end of 2011.

 

Thanks Steve, that's what I was getting at.

People seem to think that sub 20% mc cord can be bought in and they can make fortunes as 'log sellers'.

Hypothetically if dry hardwood cord/roundwood was available (20-25% moisture max) what would people be prepared to pay?

I would imagine most commercially sold cordwood( attic loads) come from estates and forestry commission jobs- using forwarders to take to road( track) side-, where there usually is space to leave it sitting for a year before selling the artic loads to hungry cord wood buyers.

A nessesary double handling.

But would agree buying cord now for this season seems a little late

Maybe Mark. But if like me sales have gone absolutely nuts this year (over 300% on last year) and I can't see my stock of seasoned logs lasting much beyond Christmas. Besides, whats the problem with someone buying seasoned logs, processing them and selling on again as firewood?

There's no problem with it Marc, and I feel your pain about running out of seasoned wood. Address this problem with massive price increases!

 

I just feel the extra logistics involved in supplying seasoned cord, as previously discussed, make it a bit of a non-starter commercially.

 

Suppliers sell by weight, and green timber weighs more. They're not daft!

Yes but there is nothing stopping them from raising their price per tonne

It's a minefield Huck.

Defining 'seasoned' is a bit difficult. Wood in the round takes a long time to hit sub 20% MC in the middle.

 

Anyone felling trees for a living doesn't want to wait years to their product.

Very true Mark. I've got a couple of interesting leads locally, so thread not in vain.

When its green they sell by the tonne when its seasoned they sell by the metre and increase the price as well. Your right their not daft
