7840 is based around Ford 5000 rear end castings. Bear that in mind next time there is a heroic situation going on at 40k with 14 tonne on the back.

 

I have seen 10, 40 and TM series brakes (amongst other marques and colours) in horrific condition, generally heat derived from constant overload (too much weight, trailer brakes below par/non-existent and too much speed) as well as reduced to their component parts and beyond, along with the rest of the drivetrain through panic induced both-feet-on-the-brakes type action, once again through too much weight, inefficient trailer braking and too much speed.

Remember that whilst you often think you have 'four wheel braking' you only actually have two relatively small brake pistons and a micro-switch behind the pedal that throws the machine into 4wd. Not good for anything, especially on black-top.

It only takes one of those components to fail to leave you with greatly reduced - or zero - braking ability.

 

I think the main thing to take away from this goes back to a earlier point i raised................DONT DRIVE TOO FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????

When fastracs where the fastest thing since sliced bread the amount that ended up over the top of hedges into feilds etc was rediculous. Tractors are getting faster every year but if you want to use your tractor for road haulage don't buy a HGV. 10-12tonne isn't unrealistic for a 130HP 40k tractor with a single circuit brake system. If it wasn't everything would be on air.

Its also worth pointing out that a four wheel drive tractor as a general rule can only legally tow twice it own weight. Two wheel drive tractors can generally tow 60% of their weight. So a six ton tractor with a twelve ton trailer is on the limit and its only allowed a three ton drawbar weight weight as a max. Traffic plod round here know all about this and are all over the tractors like a bag of fleas.

They are also very heavy.

I think its also a max weight of 24 tonnes for the combination

Just this trailer altered to mount timber crane on it, I'm well happy with it

Did you extend the drawbar or does it suffer fouling and how much does does it affect the turning circle?

Well I went for a marston 8 tonne grain trailer in the end. Need to fettle the headboard a bit so I can see into the trailer when loading, but overall very pleased with it

the other thing you need to remember, your limited to 20mph with any tractor , doesnt matter what speed you can do, exceed 20, get a ticket and open up a whole can of worms if the plod wants to check things under C&U act
