Scotland in October

We are thinking of taking a weeks touring holiday in Scotland later in the year. It will have to be mid october, is this too late to appreciate the beauty of Scotland?

 

As its only a week we were thinking something along the lines of first stop in the lake district, then on to Oban, Fort William, Inverness, Elgin, then down through the cairngorms.

 

Any thoughts on the best places to visit and the ones to avoid will be appreciated.

I was up in the Black Isle last October for four days and the weather was amazing ! But in Scotland you can never be sure , usually wetter weather on the west side of the country .

I guess the best scenery is on the west too.

You could get good weather in October , the West coast is awesome in good weather , but it's pretty in loads of other bits too , they call the Moray firth the Scottish riviera and the Fife fishing villages are beautiful , so's Perthshire.

You could go up the West and down the East . I'm sure you'll enjoy it no matter where you go .

There's usually good weather to be had in October in the far North as that's grain harvest season. The east coast area north of Inverness - Dornoch, Helmsdale etc - may not be the most dramatic but it's quiet and still picturesque.

Just don't think that because you've got to Inverness there's nothing beyond: John O'Groats is only 2.5 hours drive on.

October is one of my favourite times over here, the colours are amazing on a good day.

How much does it cost to get on to Mull, Bob? Standard car size vehicle.

We went pretty much same route recently, a few must sees are, falls of mysak near Ullapool. Kyle of lochalsh Eileen donnagh castle. And the forestry commision campsite Cairngorms near the mountain centre I've forgotten the name but it's got a small loch and woodland with red squirrels.

 

It's also worth doing dunked and the hermitage on the way back down the A9, where you can see quite a few heritage trees.

Knoydart is really nice , get the boat over from mallaig cracking scenery !

Go further north. The Highlands south of the Great Glen are fine, but the north west coast is where it's at for truely spectacular scenery. Get yourself to Ullapool and follow the coast all the way around to Tongue and head south again. The 'Insel' (island) mountains of Assynt are the finest in the UK (Suilven is my favourite Scottish mountain). The beaches are also second to none, the finest being Ceannabeinne 3 miles east of Durness.

 

If you are going to come all the way up here, you might as well see the best bits!
