After doing a small hedge job at work today it got me wondering why I couldn't do jobs like this myself?

I'm in quite a good position where I'm still living with parents and my boss asks what days I'm free to work and has plenty of work for me. Ideally I'd like to get to a stage where I'm doing 3 days with him doing proper arb work and then 3 days for myself doing my thing...

I was thinking if I got a trailer, combi tool which allows me to strim/hedgecut, rakes, blower etc I could do light tree work/landscaping/hedging etc...

I was thinking If I get the gear together then get a load of flyers printed off.

What other gear would you suggest? Maybe a mower?

If any lads have done the same I'd appreciate any advice you can give me :)

I would suggest an Easy-Lift Harness. You will be able to increase your work production 100 to 200% while being in complete control of the implement you have attached for the first time. If you can make it to the Arb forrestry event on the 26/27 of July I will be happy to let you try on the ELH and you will be astonished, to say the least:thumbup1:. If you are unable to meet up at the show send me a PM and I will be happy to meet up in person with the ELH to try. All the best.

You don't need a van. A car is cheaper for insurance, etc, stick a trailer behind it and away you go!

Basic tools should be a combi tool with strimmer and hedgecutter attachments (or one of each, hand gardening tools, a barrow, a blower and a sprayer. Good money in weedkilling.

As stated, your boss will find someone else. That's the way it goes.

All you need Butch is a van,a trailer, hedgecutter, mower and a half decent saw, advertise locally, and you'll never look back. Best of british mate.

This is what I'm thinking! :001_smile:

I'm self employed for whoever asked.

Thanks for the kind words and support guys! I think I'll just get a trailer and basic tools and see how it goes...

Self employed? Then short of tapping up his clients, do what you like.

Thats it in a nutshell. If he doesnt use you every day then he wouldm't be surprised that you are thinking along these lines.

I would suggest you mention it to him though, if he drove past when you were doing your own thing you wouldn't want him being 'too surprised'.

If you are working effectively as a subbie he could just stop using you overnight which might put a lot more pressure on you to succeed on your own but if he is aware then it's all friendly and above board.

One of my guys is doing this and we get on just fine, it's the way of the world.

Best be careful what I say - he's a forum member:thumbup::thumbup:

Always be professional, no surprises, keep your contacts as friends.
