I did the same 10 years ago in construction. My boss was mire than helpful letting me use his pickup and tools on weekends if I needed them, but he wasn't really interested in the small jobs I was doing then anyway. I would recommend a trip to the beer garden aFter work oneday, and be honest. He may be more helpful than you think. Afterall he was in your posistion a few years ago I'm sure.

Exactly!!

 

So in a few years you could become real competition, which he may not want, plus why continue to use someone who intends to leave.

My point exactly. Why should he still give you work to support you while you set up your own business to go into competition against him? It would be easy to say 'we wouldn't be competing for the same size jobs' but, at the moment, plenty of firms are having to go for jobs which would previously have been viewed as not their usual thing. By all means talk to the guy, but don't be surprised if he cuts off your supply of work.:001_smile:

If you run a business and employ someone, teaching them the reality of the job - should you be surprised if they have a eureka moment and consider running their own company and (by default) becoming a competitor?

 

If that's your view it would be safest not to employ anyone in case they develop into a rival.

 

Did evevryone with this anxiety start up their own company styraight from college, or after redundancy in another industry - without learning a bit from others??

 

I suspect not - get realistic, it's always happened and it always will.

 

Keep on good terms and maybe even share huge jobs in the future -

 

This is, of course, just my humble opinion.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen. I'm saying don't be surprised if the guy the OP has been working for declines the opportunity to make it easy for the OP by continuing to give him work. Why would anybody help the competition? That's just realistic, after all. :001_smile:

Thanks guys, been a great help! Got my eye on a 8ftx4ft trailer and just looked at a small job (half dayish worth of work)... I plan to buy tools as I go along and need them.

 

I'm relatively new to the industry and certainly know my limits and plan on sticking to them! :)

 

As It'll just be the odd job at first, I've got a place I can burn brash so that's my plan at first... What about a waste license?

Its not actually legal to take brash to your yard, or anywhere else, and burn it, its fine to burn on the site where its cut, but not to transport and burn.

 

I'm in no way saying people don't do it, just pointing out the legalities.

True, but everyone and his dog does, so if you get a tug (very unlikely) say it's from your own garden.:thumbup:

being your own boss is going to be harder than you imagined - where work was arranged for you and all the admin/h&s was done, you'll have to do it...all the responsibility and all the pressure. It is likely that this is the beginning of the end of your current arrangement.

so do us all a favour and charge a decent rate (prob double what you were paid before), even if you are living at home - save the money/live well, move out of home and move on up! best of luck
