I don't think this is something to get hung up on guys. I doubt very much that is the intention of the revision.

 

Also note that this is the consultation phase which ends on 16 March 2009 - nothing is set in stone so let's not light the torches and break out the pitchforks just yet.

 

I quote the executive summary [my emphasis in bold]:-

 

"These changes are only a proposal and please send your comments on the proposed structure and units to [email protected]..."

 

Did anyone actually read the document??

health and safety training for employees, and the self-employed in

respect of themselves, when:

● they first start work;

● they are exposed to new or increased risks; and

● they require refresher training - at appropriate intervals,

particularly if the skills are not used frequently. This is

recommended at specific intervals for certain high-risk

activities, eg operating chainsaws.

 

 

This I was aware of, however the wording of the NPTC surpasses this as it indicates that the tickets will be invalidated. I sujest that this needs re-phrasing or valaidation of intention. My point is to query the amendments, making sure that they are clear and unambiguous

Funny how they are doing this at the hight of the finacial crisis when people are losing thier jobs all over. It is just another tax and a away to justify thier jobs. How are you going justify to a judge not felling a dangerous tree that has fallen and killed someone because over night you are no longer qualified to do the work and need to go on a refresher along with every body else in the country. God forbid if it did happen the land owner would be in the crap you might be in it aswell but NPTC ? they would be the real people to blame

So you are only "recommended" to do refresher training if you don't do a part of the work you trained for all the time.

 

As a tree specialist I ONLY do the work I trained for ALL the time!! Sorted!!

Could that be the whole point of this, jobs for the boys?

 

yep jobs for the boys in my opinion.....i cant work out why are industry and construction as well we have to carry so much dead wood that suck up every profit,time and resources for the average contractor, great if your a huge one with a massive turn over but it means no one else can evan get on the starting block due to the training costs, time and managment to evan understand every hse reg that changes every minute! .

I listened to two trainers yesterday in my local saw shop....what a perfect job!

Surely it all comes down to cost ? When i worked for the LA we did refresher trainning every couple of years and got a certificate for it. If it's 100.00 a man for a day in the woods every two years for a refresher surely that's not a bad thing ?

 

If the cost reflected the cost of the present NPTC units then of course it's going to be a huge stone around the small business's neck. TBH though i think most LA's have there own assesor for updates, we did anyway so the ongoing cost was small.

for my sins i have very recently started to sit on the NOS:confused1: new arb boy in old boys forestry club, it takes about three years to make changes so this change started long years ago!

 

we have started to rewright the NOS for a working arb view once this is done (3 years) lantra/nptc look at it to see if there are any gaps that they can fill with more units, previously the arb NOS has had a lot of input from forestry and trainers:sneaky2:
