As far as the job is worth really. I was in Dumfries last week and went down to St Hellens this week. When subbing i travel upto 60 miles in with my day rate further i charge for fuel. I try and build jobs in certain areas together. I had a rook of small domestic jobs that i managed to smash out in Carlisle in 2 days. Just need to sort out logistics of chip sites/wood buyers if it's not economical to haul home. There are quite a few firms that work over 100 miles from base weekly. I suppose it's all in the numbers really but i know i couldn't earn a crust only working 15-20 miles from my base as theres way too many treeworkers and not enough work.

We go where people will pay us to go.

We are careful however on how far we go to quote. Try to get agreement on a budget first for longer distance clients and then group them together for quoting.

I have the view that if I do not think where is the nearest airport when a customer tells me their location, that they are local! I realize that this is not realistic though!

I think I should have named this thread 'how far are you prepared to travel to quote'.? Obviously if you actually get a job far off its worth travelling to but I was more interested how far folk go to quote- I don't really like asking the customers how many other quotes they are getting and the information they usually provide as to how big the job is is usually vague to say the least.

If you offer free quotations most of us do then to drive 30+ miles find the address and then find out its an hour or twos work is a waste of time when someone more local can afford to be cheaper as they don't have to travel.
