gate return springs

Iv'e been doing a few field gates for the LA and they supply all,the hardware the trouble is the gate closing springs are pant's the small piece of metal that you fit under tensionin in the top will not stay in or pop's out when it slams

 

does any one fit them in a different way or know of a better make ? the ones they supply are 10'' gatemate

If we are doing self closing gates we tend to us a 6x6"x8 ft square post and offset the hinges to which ever way you want the gate to close. You can just about see what i mean in the picture.

 

But the ones the gate suppliers are crap. As are the screws they supply. We use Centrewire for our metal framed gates but buy the gate gear from a local agri merchant as it is cheaper and easier. The gate and corral were supplied by Centrewire but came without instructions and dimensions which was not very helpful.

Had the same problem myself in the past, LA supplied gates including return springs, in the end we just used to offset the hangers and stick the return spring on as an assister. This seemed to keep the LA happy even though the spring wasn't really doing anything!

I have had the same problem especially with bloody kids ripping them of on rights of ways. I now use two eye hooks with a chain between( one on post one on gate) and a foot long piece of drain pipe filled with concrete in the middle, jobs a good un.
