Im thinking about the extra 30 percent as well,takes it up to about the 200quid mark,thinking about bit of srt gear.

Petzl really screwed the pooch on this one.

One thing I do not understand, why all the love for Petzl, what have they ever done for you ?

They made a piece of kit that could have, or will, kill someone !

I like their Carabiners too, I even climb in one of their saddles, but as far as this is concerned they have taken a severe fall in my eyes, and they should be made to pay for it in some way, or what do they learn ?

That Arborists have little value for their own lives, and will use any bit of kit that is shiny and new ?

I really hope not, people who climbed on these should be indignant, I would be.

All this oh everyone makes a mistake, we are only human peace joy and love is a load of BS.

Petzl deserves your anger.

 

I hear you Grace, to be honest knowing what I know I actually like Petzl more now, yes I am disappointed and whilst I know nothing of the second accident I hope know one was seriously hurt. I am bitterly disappointed yet after using one I am actually looking forward to seeing what Petzl do with the zig zag next year.

 

And what have petzl done for me? Provided me good kit to carry out my job safely for the last decade, and now given me an extra £50 to spend on more Petzl goodies.

I'm exactly the same. Knowing that Petzl have already started to manufacture a new version and are acting so quickly with everything to do with the ZZ I am also really looking forward to version 2!

So there we have. Total recall.

 

It's a big shame that someone has cocked up along the line and tarnished the reputation of, what looks like, a nice piece of kit. Not to mention the damage that has been done to Petzl's reputation.

 

I hope they don't rush things too much. I hope they don't just focus only on the top connection. This product was only in use for about a month so nobody had time judge the long-term strength/reliability of the whole thing. There are a lot of moving parts in it.

 

What about the actual ziggy-zaggy part? How will it stand up to cold, rain, dust, resin etc? And how will it stand up to side loading? From what I can see the mechanism only applies friction along one axis. What if you swing into a branch and bang it from the side. Will it absorb the impact or will it need to be straightened. Will the links loosen? This is quite different to a rope which applies friction through 360 deg., is very supple and a great shock absorber.

 

I hope they let some hooligans test it to destruction (under controlled conditions of course). Pushing it way beyond its normal operating limits. I haven't designed anything like this but I have designed software and websites - and one thing I learned is that people do weird things that you never thought of when you were doing all your testing and creating all your error messages!

 

Petzl will also be hoping that no one sneaks in with a better product before Jan 2014.
