And managed to line the pockets of her mates at the same time, convenient that.....

I'm glad she got re-elected. The consequences of a Michael Foot government in the 1983 election or a Neil Kinnock government in the next would have been horrifying. Why do you think the 1983 election was such a landslide victory

To me it is a bit like when Reagan died, brought back memories of my childhood, strong personality/character who was always on the television back when there was only a few channels, I would hazard a guess that everyone knew she was the prime minister, unlike nowadays.

Being brought up north of the border I know there is/was alot of resentment towards her policies. I will remember her as a very strong leader of the country and have respect for her strength and resolve in an era when we needed someone like her.

There was alot going on then with the Falklands, The Troubles, the real threat from the Cold War of nuclear oblivion to name a few.

The channel tunnel was approved by herself and the French president which although I have never used I would say is a tremendous engineering feat.

I would finish by saying in my opinion the country has today lost a great public servant who changed the way we live today. I don't think the country will ever see her likes again.

:crying:

Some of her decisions like the privatisation of national assets were scandalous and we are still paying for the mess. We have one of the worst rail systems in the world - fragmented, heavily subsidised, foreign owned and bled dry by shareholders rather than money spent on improvements and safety (even the older Tories agree with this). Our water companies are now just about all foreign owned and ripping us off as well as being highly inefficient. We have only one deep mine still open despite the country floating on a sea of coal. I could go on and on though. Having to rely on foreign companies for our water, gas, electricity, half our communications systems, airports and other basics doesn't make for a country on a sound footing and these national assets should have all been put in separate trusts for the good of the nation.

She did however have balls and wasn't scared of a fight unlike our present leadership. During our current economic crisis we need strong leadership and a sense of purpose instead of the muddle through approach that this country is getting at the present moment. When we eventually get through this crisis it will be despite the current coalition and their policies and not due to them!

Love her or hate her, she was a giant amongst politicians, especially when compared to the spineless pygmies who came later. I would dare to suggest that she was the last honourable, honest and charismatic politician before the rot of avarice, spin and sleaze enveloped the political scene.

The tragedy reading and hearing some of the comments here and elsewhere today is that so many still are unable to learn from the mistakes of history. Without that ability, what hope do we have?

Personally I did not always think she was right and certainly did not support all her Governments' policies, but she had my utmost respect as a leader.

RIP. I doubt we will see the likes of her again.
