I suspect its the tiny gob that does it, you can see in the slow motion that it starts to roll as the gob closes.

 

I think to be more accurate you need an open gob to allow the hinge to hold for as long as poss.

Nice touch. Yes a more open mouth would have had less affect on that twist off the stump, and of course a lower cut too. He skimmed it!
