re pointing of slabs as most of you do make it damp then spread into joints and trowel in with a bucket handle.

now the debate i lay slabs on sharp sand cement mix. others say lay a hard base wit either cement dobs i hate or a thin mix of sharp sand cement. i think its a waste of time putting down a hard base if using harp sand cement mix thick enough do not lay many slabs but thats the way i lay them any better idears to my way. be good to know from those who do it a lot.

I always lay minimum 100mm type1 base, and allow 2" bed on average thickness slab, I use coarse sharp sand. We call it washed river grit round here. I point in a mix of soft and leighton sharp(king of sands). I think the only way you can not lay a base is if you lay in minmum 100mm bed. This can makes slabs float when laying next to them and is waste of cement and energy knocking it up. I always lay a solid bed of mortar.
