Poplar catch 22

Recommended Posts

I have potential job in a small bit of woodland where the client wants to clear all the poplars on his land bar the ones on the border of his property. The problem is he does'nt want any stumps suckering up and if i poison them i run the risk of poisoning the ones he wants to keep. Anyone have any ideas???

Poplars can still shoot from runners from a long way from the original stump,

Even if you grind the stump you won't get all of it. Cue a forest of suckers!

That is what i have to avoid. Maybe i have to just poison the stumps then see how it affects the retainers, with the possibility of removing the most effected ones???

TBH that is what I'd do. I cannot say with any authority if you will poison any of the others. There are plenty of blokes on here who should be able to help. I am sure they'll be along in a minute. Maybe rename the thread "poisoning stumps"

Ecoplugs can translocate the same as any other glyphosate based product (I believe). You won't avoid suckering but it will be drastically reduced if you remove as much root/stump as possible. If you allow for revisits to clear any suckers (quick job with a clearing saw) they will become less of a problem over time, particularly if there is to be new planting on the cleared area.
